Holliswood, NY 11423
Neighborhood Description:
Holliswood came into existence in 1884 when land developer, Frederick Dunton, fell in love with the rolling green hills he saw as he passed by on the rail road. Shortly thereafter, he purchased the land and began building.
He created a uniquely beautiful, green, rural neigborhood that still maintains its basic essence even a century later. What makes Holliswood so different from other neighborhoods in North Eastern Queens is that instead of following a grid system Dunton built the roads and parcels on circular streets, and did not create sidewalks. Holliswood's lots are considered very large, and all the streets that are circular have the letter O in its name. The streets that are straight, McLaughlin Avenue, for example, do not have an O in the name. Apparently, Dunton put a lot of planning into creating his ideal neighborhood.
Today, Holliswood's curved streets, delight its residents, and Holliswood home owners are even willing to pay higher taxes to maintain the neighborhoods "No Sidewalk" policy.
In the early 2000's Holliswood's charm was threatened by lax zoning laws that allowed developers to buy up parcels and develop them. However, the residents were successful in overturning the city's decision, and now Holliswood proudly boasts R1-2 zoning.
Holliswood is an ethnically, and religiously diverse neighborhood that continues to attract commuters that desire a slice of rural life coupled with a short ride into the city.
