Renting Basics 101

When searching for an apartment to rent you should consider the following before submitting an application:

  1. Does the apartment meet your size requirements?
  2. Does the house/building seem decently maintained?
  3. Are all the appliances in working order?
  4. What is included with the rent, for example, heat, electricity, cable, gas, water?
  5. Are there laundry facilities on premises, if not, are you allowed to install a washer/dryer in the apartment?
  6. Is the apartment air-conditioned?
  7. How close are you to conveniences such as, public transportation, grocery store, gas station, etc.?
  8. What are the average utility bills, if not included in the rent?
  9. Is there off-street parking available?


Before you sign your name to a lease you should carefully read through the entire document.  Pay special attention that the below items re correct on the lease:

  1. The effective date of the lease
  2. The expiration date of the lease
  3. Accurate rental price, and scheduled, or anticipated rent increases on lease renewals
  4. Grounds under which the lease may be terminated
  5. The return of your security deposit, and reasons it might not be returned
  6. Penalties, and or responsibilities of tennant for moving out prior to the lease expiration
